History of Astronomy

With Australia’s strong history in astronomy, the field of astronomy history is also alive and well in Australia.

Staff at the Australian Astronomical Observatory are researching the development of astronomical instrumentation, historic transits of Venus, cometary astronomy and various aspects of Australian, New Zealand and South African astronomical history.

A group of current and retired staff at the Australia Telescope National Facility is involved in researching the history of Australian and New Zealand radio astronomy, with emphasis on the emergence of solar radio astronomy, the pre-1961 Radiophysics Division field stations, and the early years at Parkes and Culgoora.

The Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage is published by James Cook University.
